FAQs
1. Who is eligible for the EA program?
The EA program is open to anyone with an interest in taxation and representation before the IRS. Here’s what you need to know about eligibility:
- No Specific Degree Requirement: Unlike many other certifications, the EA program does not require a specific educational background. Whether you’re a student, tax professional, or someone looking to enter the tax industry, you can pursue the EA designation.
- No Work Experience Requirement: There is no mandatory work experience needed to enroll in the EA program or take the exam. This makes it accessible to those starting their career or looking to switch to tax representation.
- PTIN Requirement: You must obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS before taking the EA exam. This is necessary to officially represent taxpayers before the IRS.
The EA program is ideal for individuals aiming to build a career in taxation with the highest IRS credential, offering opportunities for growth in both the US and global markets.
2. Who conducts the EA exam?
The Enrolled Agent (EA) exam is conducted by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The exam, known as the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE), is administered on behalf of the IRS through Prometric testing centers.
The IRS oversees the entire process to ensure that candidates are thoroughly tested on their knowledge of tax laws and their ability to represent taxpayers before the IRS.

The Enrolled Agent (EA) license is awarded by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). After successfulauthorizes the EA exam (Special Enrollment Examination) and obtaining a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), the IRS grants you the EA license. This credential authorizes you to represent taxpayers in all matters before the IRS, making it the highest tax certification issued by the IRS.
